Gender Roles according to Scripture

The scriptures have a lot to say regarding gender roles and identity.

In both the old testament and the new testament, men and women are equal in relation to God but different in relation to each other.

Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV) Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Galatians 3:26-28 (NIV) So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Before Christ, men and women were equal in their rule over creation and since they were both created in the image of God, they both were designed to reflect God's attributes and character to the world.

Men and women are totally equal in intrinsic value, deserving the same respect as God's image bearers.

God gave the man the primary responsibility to take care of the garden and the women was created from man as a helper in his role.

Genesis 2:15 (NIV) The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Genesis 2:20 (NIV) So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

This is the greatest distinction between men and women. Men have the primary responsibility and women are helpers.

However, after sin entered the world, a curse came to both the man and the woman.

Genesis 3:16-17 (NIV) To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.

The woman's curse brought painful labor during childbirth and an unhealthy dependence on their husbands.

The man's curse negatively affected the ground and brought painful toil to his work.

In order to compensate for the curse, some women claim independence from men and believe they can do all things on their own, which Paul addressed in one of his letters:

1 Timothy 2:12 (NIV) I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.

The men compensated for the curse by being slothful, as described in proverbs. Paul does not allow those kind of men to become overseers:

1 Timothy 3:4 (NIV) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect.

Let's review with Paul's teaching to the Corinthians and the noble wife in proverbs.

1 Corinthians 11:3 (NIV) But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Proverbs 31:15-17 (NIV) She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

It is clear that the man has a higher authority than the woman as Christ has a higher authority than the man.

The woman is a strong helper, earning profit, buying property and providing for her family.

What a beautiful picture of the man loving his wife and the wife submitting to her husband.

Ephesians 5:22 (NIV) Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord...

Ephesians 5:25 (NIV) Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her...

As a team, they work together for the good of their family and can bless the entire community!

How can we find this blessed life?

Only in Christ.

Why?

Galatians 3:13 (NIV) Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

Since Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, we don't have to bear the effects of the curse anymore.

For women, that means painless childbirth and a desire for God above her husband.

For men, that means no more painful toil in his work and a fruitful harvest.

How can we receive these benefits?

The same say we receive any benefits from God – through faith!

If you can't believe anyone could avoid these curses, then trust me, you will continue to live with these curses, but if you can trust God above your own reasoning, then the promises of God are yours to take hold of!

Matthew 19:26 (NIV) Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
